With fall 2016’s New York Fashion week coming to a close, trends were set, styles were transformed and boundaries were pushed. These runway shows debut the collections that eventually down a long line of fashion icons, stores, and more, set the tone for the common consumer. If you are a 22 year-old “broke college student” cliche like me (holla), NYFW is exciting to watch and keep up with, but ultimately kind of depressing because it just shows me what I can’t afford and could never pull off . However, something I always like to pay attention to – the real NYFW for me – is the outfits and street style of the celebrities and fashion icons sitting in the audience. From Kylie Jenner to Bella Hadid to Ashley Graham, some of the most iconic and inspirational looks that carry the biggest impact for me are the ready-to-wear, realistic trends that I can both pull off and create with my budget and resources.
This NYFW’s audiences featured several trends seen repeatedly. The one trend that I am seeing everywhere and something that you can wear to the bar when going out with your friends and look chic and trendy AF without looking like you’re trying way too hard, is this year’s must-have look of the fall: over-the-knee boots.
Over-the-knee boots are versatile in function and purpose. Because the length is longer than normal riding boots, extending past the knee to the thigh, the boots have the effect of making legs look longer. The appearance of longer legs then creates a slimming illusion, enhancing the slimmest part of your bottom half, while at the same time, covering up bare legs. Throw on a pair of heeled or wedged OTK boots and your legs will look longer, thinner, and toner while also accentuating the booty. Kim K ain’t got nothing on us!
Another reason these boots are so amazing is because of its ability to mix-and-match with a variety of outfits and trends. You care pair them with an oversized t-shirt for a relaxed look, a dress – skater or bodycon – for a sweet or bombshell look, a skirt and top, jean shorts, skinny jeans, and more. They go with just about anything and transform an average look to a chic, sexy, striking look.
My first OTK boots I got were chestnut suede ones. I found mine at Express for a very reasonable price given the look and quality. And no joke, I’ve had about 5 people ask me if they were Jeffrey Campbell’s. So, that feels good knowing your bargain purchase doesn’t lack in look. It was my first time whipping out the OTK’s and the look itself was still new to everyday fashion trends, so I went with the chestnut because I felt the brown made it more of a subtle, everyday look. I’m obsessed with them and have put those babies to work! I love, love, love this look and think every woman should experience the confident, badass feeling you get when wearing them.
Recently, I’ve bought my second pair of OTK’s. I wanted black this time, preferably with a flat sole and a tie string at the top (I don’t know why, I just love the look of the OTK’s with the tie). My first OTK’s had a little wedge heel on them, and I loved it because it took a safe, subtle shoe and amped it up a bit without going too crazy. I realized black boots can be paired with a lot more than I first expected and isn’t as loud and bold as I initially thought they would be. We all know the old wives tale, “black makes you look thinner.” Well, this is also true with these boots. The flat sole makes it versatile for daytime or nighttime. It doesn’t hurt that after a full day in these boots, your feet won’t be hurting like they typically do in heels or wedges. Bless.
Now, designers are creating and releasing so many different colors, styles, and more of the OTK’s. From grey to burgundy to suede to velvet, the options are endless. So have some fun and don’t be afraid to try something risky. Chances are people will look up to you for wearing the basic trend in a unique way. So do you girl!
So obviously I’m really into these boots, and hopefully you guys can see why. Even though the OTK’s are this year’s fall must-have look, they are a classic boot style that can be and will be worn for years and seasons to come. My opinion, it’s worth the purchase – whether it be a bargain or a splurge – to get yourself a pair and own those babies like you’re on the catwalk of NYFW.
Stay confident beautiful ladies.
